Behind the Design: The Journey of the Sunset Train Puzzle

Every puzzle we create starts with an idea and a spark of imagination. For this one, I wanted to capture the beauty of a high-speed train racing through the Northeast Corridor at sunset—a scene full of energy, motion, and glowing color. My goal was to create an image that felt painterly, vibrant, and rich in detail—perfect for transforming into an art puzzle.

Crafting the Vision with AI

The first step was giving the AI a clear creative direction. I’ve learned that being specific makes all the difference. I told it to create the image in the style of an oil painting, emphasizing bold colors and expressive brushwork. The AI may be powerful, but it can’t read your mind—so it took several tries and prompt adjustments to get the look I envisioned.

After many iterations, this was the version that stood out to me. It had that painterly texture I love, with a glowing sky that looked like melted sunset light reflecting off the sleek surface of the train.

Preparing the Image for Production

Once I downloaded the AI image, I needed to make sure it was large enough for printing. The file still wasn’t quite big enough, so I used Gigapixel—a tool that increases resolution without losing clarity—to scale the image up to fit my largest puzzle size, 16 x 20 inches. From there, I created all the smaller puzzle ratios.

When you’re working on puzzles, small imperfections really matter—especially since puzzlers see every detail up close. As I examined the image, I noticed a few odd things:

  • Random lights glowing in the bushes on the left
  • Strange weeds and scratches near the tracks
  • A made-up train name that didn’t make sense

I used Photoshop to clean up each of those areas. Then I saw that one of the train’s headlights was “burned out,” even though its reflection still appeared on the ground. With some careful brushwork, I painted the light back on.

Finally, I realized a power pole in the background seemed to float in midair. I extended it using a Photoshop brush so it connected naturally to the ground—just one of those small details that can make or break the realism of an image.

Ready for Puzzle Lovers

After all those edits, I stepped back and looked at the finished piece. The colors glowed beautifully—purples, pinks, oranges, and blues blending in a stunning evening palette. It had the perfect mix of smooth gradients and fine detail, making it both challenging and rewarding to piece together.

Now that it’s puzzle-ready, this Sunset Train Puzzle is available in my Etsy shop: leyvonnepuzzles.etsy.com.

Whether you’re drawn to the rich painterly style or the satisfying geometry of the train itself, I hope this puzzle brings you as much joy in assembling it as I found in creating it.
